Playlist

A playlist in digital signage is an ordered sequence of content items — images, videos, web pages, or apps — that play on a screen in rotation.

What Is a Playlist?

In digital signage, a playlist is an ordered collection of content items that cycle through on a display. Think of it like a slideshow: each item plays for a set duration, and when the list ends it loops back to the beginning.

What Can Go in a Playlist?

Playlists can contain a mix of content types:

  • Images — photos, graphics, promotional banners
  • Videos — product demos, brand videos, informational clips
  • Web pages — live dashboards, social feeds, news tickers
  • App widgets — weather, clock, calendar, KPI dashboards

Playlist vs Schedule

A playlist defines what content plays and in what order. A schedule defines when a playlist plays — for example, a breakfast menu playlist from 7–11 AM and a lunch menu playlist from 11 AM–3 PM.

Best Practices

  • Keep it focused — 5–10 items per playlist works well; too many items and viewers lose interest.
  • Set appropriate durations — images typically need 8–15 seconds, while videos play for their full length.
  • Mix content types — alternate between static images and dynamic widgets to hold attention.
  • Use content rotation to keep things fresh without manually rebuilding playlists.
