Content Versioning

Content versioning is the practice of maintaining multiple saved versions of screen content so that previous layouts and playlists can be restored if a change causes problems.

What Is Content Versioning?

Content versioning is the ability to save, label, and restore previous states of your digital signage content. Like version control in software development (Git) or the revision history in Google Docs, it creates a safety net: if a content update causes problems — a broken layout, incorrect information, a corrupted file — you can roll back to a known good state.

Why It Matters

Digital signage is often visible to customers or the public, which means mistakes are immediately visible. Common scenarios where versioning prevents problems:

  • Wrong promotion went live — a sale price was published before approval; use the available version controls to restore a reviewed layout
  • Template broken after an edit — someone adjusted the layout and it broke on certain screen sizes; restore the previous working version
  • Seasonal content needs repeating — last year's Christmas campaign was great; restore it rather than rebuilding from scratch
  • Compliance issue — a piece of content is flagged and needs immediate removal; revert while a replacement is prepared

Versioning vs. Templates

These are complementary, not the same thing:

  • Templates are reusable starting points for new content — blank frameworks you build on
  • Versioning is a history of actual published content — snapshots you can restore

A good content workflow uses both: templates for efficient creation, and versioning as a safety net after publication.

Connection to Approval Workflows

In organisations with content approval workflows, versioning provides accountability alongside control: you can see not just who approved what, but what the content looked like at each stage of review. This is particularly useful in regulated industries (healthcare, financial services) where content compliance must be demonstrable.
