Multi-Zone Layout
A multi-zone layout divides a digital signage screen into multiple areas, each displaying different content simultaneously.
Also known as: Split-Screen Layout, Zones
What Is a Multi-Zone Layout?
A multi-zone layout divides a single digital signage screen into multiple independent zones, each displaying different content simultaneously. For example, one zone might show a video, while another shows a news ticker and a third displays the weather.
Common Configurations
- L-shape — main content area with a sidebar and bottom ticker
- Split-screen — two equal halves showing different content
- Picture-in-picture — small overlay zone on top of full-screen content
- Grid — multiple equal zones for dashboards or directories
- Ticker + main — full-screen content with a scrolling text bar at the bottom
Use Cases
- Corporate lobbies — company video in the main zone, weather and time in sidebars, news ticker at the bottom
- Event signage — session schedule in the main zone, sponsor logos rotating in a sidebar
- Retail — product video in the main zone, promotions and pricing in side zones
- Operations — KPI dashboard with multiple metric zones
Design Tips
- Don't overdo it — 2–3 zones is usually optimal; more than 4 zones makes content hard to read
- Hierarchy matters — make the most important content the largest zone
- Consider resolution — each zone gets a fraction of the total pixels; 1080p screens may not have enough resolution for many small zones
- Use contrasting backgrounds — help zones feel visually distinct
