Screen Resolution
Screen resolution is the number of pixels a display can show, measured in width by height. Common signage resolutions include 1080p (Full HD) and 4K (UHD).
What Is Screen Resolution?
Screen resolution refers to the number of pixels a display can show, expressed as width × height. Higher resolution means more pixels, which means sharper, more detailed content. In digital signage, choosing the right resolution affects content quality, hardware costs, and media player requirements.
Common Resolutions in Signage
- 720p (1280×720) — HD; adequate for text-heavy displays viewed from a distance
- 1080p (1920×1080) — Full HD; the most common signage resolution, good balance of quality and cost
- 4K / UHD (3840×2160) — Ultra HD; sharp and detailed, ideal for close-viewing distances or video walls
- Portrait mode — same resolutions rotated 90° (e.g., 1080×1920 for vertical displays)
How to Choose
Consider these factors:
- Viewing distance — at 10+ feet away, the difference between 1080p and 4K is barely noticeable
- Content type — detailed graphics and text benefit from higher resolution; simple images and large text work fine at 1080p
- Multi-zone layouts — each zone uses a fraction of total pixels; higher base resolution helps
- Hardware costs — 4K media players and displays cost more
- Screen size — larger screens benefit more from higher resolution
Best Practice
For most digital signage deployments, 1080p (Full HD) is the sweet spot. It's supported by virtually all media players, content is easy to create, and quality is excellent for typical viewing distances. Reserve 4K for video walls, large-format displays, or situations where viewers are within a few feet of the screen.
