Programmatic DOOH
Programmatic DOOH (Digital Out-of-Home) is the automated buying and serving of digital advertising on public screens using real-time data and audience targeting.
Also known as: pDOOH, Programmatic Digital Out-of-Home
What Is Programmatic DOOH?
Programmatic DOOH (Digital Out-of-Home) is the automated, data-driven buying and delivery of advertising content on digital screens in public spaces — billboards, transit displays, retail screens, and venue networks. It mirrors how programmatic advertising works on the web, but applied to physical screens.
Rather than a brand negotiating a fixed ad placement manually, programmatic DOOH uses software platforms to buy impressions in real time based on audience data, context triggers, and campaign parameters.
How It Works
- Screen owners (publishers) connect their displays to a Supply-Side Platform (SSP) and make inventory available.
- Advertisers set campaign parameters — target audience, geography, time of day, contextual triggers (weather, events) — via a Demand-Side Platform (DSP).
- When a trigger fires (e.g., temperature drops below 10°C, a sports event starts nearby), the system automatically serves the relevant ad creative to matching screens.
- Impression data is reported back to the advertiser in near real time.
Context Triggers in Practice
Programmatic DOOH is particularly effective with contextual triggers:
- Weather — a hot drink brand serves ads when temperature drops; a sunscreen brand when UV index rises
- Time of day — breakfast offers in the morning, commuter messaging in the evening
- Events — ads for nearby venues activate when a concert or sports match is occurring
- Foot traffic — higher-value impressions served during peak footfall periods
Relevance for Venue Operators
If you operate a screen network with significant foot traffic — a shopping centre, transit hub, or large coworking campus — programmatic DOOH is a way to monetise your screens by selling inventory to advertisers. Ad spend on programmatic DOOH reached an estimated $1.35B in 2026 and is growing rapidly.
For smaller operators, the more immediately relevant concept is contextual content automation — applying similar trigger logic to your own content (not paid ads) to show the right message at the right time. See content automation for the non-advertising equivalent.
