A touch display is a screen equipped with touch-sensing technology, allowing users to interact with content by tapping, swiping, or gesturing. In the context of digital signage, touch displays transform passive viewers into active participants.

Common Uses in Signage

• Wayfinding — interactive maps where users can search for rooms, exhibits, or stores
• Self-service kiosks — check-in stations, order placement, information lookup
• Product catalogs — browse inventory, view details, and check availability
• Event directories — find sessions, speakers, or booth locations at conferences

Touch Technologies

• Capacitive — most common; responsive and multi-touch capable, like a smartphone
• Infrared (IR) — uses a grid of IR beams; works with gloves and any object
• Resistive — pressure-based; less common in modern signage, more durable in harsh environments

Considerations

When deploying touch displays for signage, consider:

• Placement height — screens should be at a comfortable reach height
• Content design — UI elements need to be large enough for finger taps (minimum 44px touch targets)
• Durability — public-facing screens need tempered glass and anti-fingerprint coatings
• Hygiene — consider antimicrobial coatings for high-traffic locations
