Audience detection uses cameras and computer vision to identify how many people are in front of a screen, how long they stay, and in some systems, aggregate demographic signals like age group.
What Is Audience Detection?
Audience detection is the use of cameras, computer vision algorithms, and sometimes depth sensors to measure who is watching a digital screen and how. Unlike web analytics — which tracks clicks and page views — audience detection works in the physical world, measuring real people in front of real screens.
What It Measures
Modern audience detection systems can report:
- Presence — is anyone in front of the screen right now?
- Count — how many people are within the viewing zone?
- Dwell time — how long did each person look at the screen?
- Attention — is the person looking at the screen, or just walking past?
- Demographic signals — estimated age range, gender (aggregate and anonymised, not individual)
- Emotional response — some systems attempt to detect positive/neutral/negative reactions
Privacy Considerations
A critical point: compliant audience detection systems do not capture, store, or transmit images of individuals. They process video locally to extract aggregate statistical data only. No face is saved; no individual is tracked. The output is data like "87 people passed this screen today, average dwell time 4.2 seconds" — not footage.
In Europe, even anonymised processing of images requires disclosure under GDPR. Deployments using audience detection cameras should include appropriate notices in the vicinity of the screen.
Practical Applications
- Retail — show different content when a crowd gathers vs. when a single person passes
- Advertising networks — sell programmatic impressions based on verified audience counts rather than estimates
- Content optimisation — identify which slides cause people to stop vs. walk past, then adjust the playlist
- Staffing — use foot traffic data near screens to inform staffing decisions in retail and hospitality
2026 Status
Audience detection is well-established in enterprise and out-of-home advertising deployments, but remains uncommon in SMB signage. The main barriers are cost (camera hardware), privacy compliance overhead, and the complexity of integrating sensor data with content management. AI is reducing the processing cost rapidly, making this technology more accessible to mid-market operators.
