Dayparting

Dayparting is the practice of dividing the day into time blocks and showing different screen content in each block — breakfast content in the morning, lunch offers at midday, evening promotions later.

Also known as: Time-based scheduling, Time-slot scheduling

What Is Dayparting?

Dayparting is a scheduling technique borrowed from broadcast television and radio. It divides the day into named time windows — morning, midday, afternoon, evening — and assigns different content to each. A screen running a dayparted playlist automatically shows the right content for the current time without any manual intervention.

The term comes from TV scheduling, where "dayparts" like morning drive (6–10am), daytime (10am–3pm), and prime time (8–11pm) have defined advertising rates based on audience size. In digital signage, the same logic applies: your audience changes throughout the day, so your content should too.

Why It Matters

A screen showing the same content at 8am, 1pm, and 6pm is leaving engagement on the table. The person arriving at your café at 8:30am wants to know about breakfast and coffee. The same person at 12:15pm wants the lunch menu. Dayparting closes that gap automatically.

Common Daypart Structures

Hospitality / Food Service:

  • Morning (6:00–11:00) — breakfast menu, coffee offers, opening hours
  • Midday (11:00–15:00) — lunch specials, queue times, daily soup
  • Afternoon (15:00–18:00) — afternoon snacks, loyalty programme, upcoming events
  • Evening (18:00–close) — dinner menu, cocktail offers, tomorrow's hours

Corporate Office:

  • Morning (7:00–10:00) — daily agenda, motivational content, meeting room status
  • Business hours (10:00–17:00) — KPI dashboards, internal news, room availability
  • End of day (17:00–19:00) — after-work events, transport info, tomorrow's schedule

Retail:

  • Opening (before 10:00) — new arrivals, staff announcements
  • Peak hours (10:00–17:00) — promotions, bestsellers, loyalty sign-up
  • Closing (after 17:00) — end-of-day deals, tomorrow's offers

How to Set It Up

In ScreenLoom, dayparting is handled through content scheduling — each playlist or individual slide can have start and end times assigned. You create separate playlists for each time block and set them to activate and deactivate automatically.

For venues with predictable audience patterns, dayparting alone delivers most of the benefit of more complex AI-based predictive playlists at zero extra cost. Our free Screen Content Ideas tool has content suggestions broken down by venue type and time of day.
