Dynamic Content
Dynamic content is screen content that updates automatically from a live data source — such as a calendar feed, weather API, social media, or POS system — without manual editing.
Also known as: Live Content, Data-driven Content
What Is Dynamic Content?
Dynamic content is any content on a digital screen that updates itself from a live data source — automatically, without anyone logging into a dashboard to make changes. It contrasts with static content, which is a fixed image or slide that only changes when someone manually replaces it.
Examples of Dynamic Content
| Source | What It Shows |
|---|---|
| Google Calendar / Outlook | Today's meetings, room bookings, upcoming events |
| Weather API | Current temperature, forecast, UV index |
| RSS feed | News headlines, blog posts, product updates |
| Social media feed | Latest Instagram posts, event hashtag mentions |
| POS / inventory system | Live prices, bestselling items, stock alerts |
| Transport API | Bus / train arrivals, disruptions |
| Internal dashboard | Sales figures, team KPIs, support queue length |
Why It's Important
Static content goes stale. A meeting room screen showing yesterday's bookings is worse than useless — it actively misleads people. Dynamic content eliminates this problem by pulling fresh data every few minutes (or in real time), so the screen is always accurate without anyone maintaining it.
For multi-screen operations, dynamic content is what makes scale feasible. Updating 50 screens manually every morning is not a realistic workflow. Connecting them all to a shared calendar feed is.
Static vs. Dynamic: What to Use When
Not all content should be dynamic. A useful mental model:
- Always dynamic: room availability, event schedules, weather, transport info, social feeds, live sales data
- Sometimes dynamic: promotions (update from a product catalogue), menu prices (update from POS)
- Usually static: brand identity, general wayfinding, welcome messages, evergreen announcements
Getting Started
The simplest dynamic content source is a Google Calendar integration — connect your calendar, and any event you create automatically appears on the relevant screen. No coding, no dashboard updates required. See content automation for a broader overview of how to layer different content types together.
