Retail Media Network
A retail media network is a collection of in-store and digital screens operated by a retailer that can be monetised by selling advertising space to brands.
Also known as: In-Store Media Network, Retail Media
What Is a Retail Media Network?
A retail media network (RMN) is a collection of advertising surfaces — primarily digital screens inside physical stores, plus the retailer's own website and app — that the retailer makes available to brand partners as paid advertising inventory.
In simple terms: a supermarket or pharmacy installs digital screens throughout its stores, then sells time on those screens to brands whose products are sold there. A coffee brand pays to appear on screens near the hot drinks aisle. A nappy brand targets the baby products section. The retailer earns ad revenue; the brand gets highly contextual placement at the point of purchase.
Why Retail Media Has Grown So Fast
Three forces converged to make retail media one of the fastest-growing advertising categories of the 2020s:
- First-party data — retailers hold rich purchase history data on their customers, which is increasingly valuable as third-party cookies disappear from the web
- Proximity to purchase — an ad seen at shelf level, seconds before a buying decision, converts far better than an ad seen at home the night before
- Screen infrastructure — the mass rollout of digital signage in retail created the physical inventory needed to serve those ads
Major networks (Amazon, Walmart Connect, Kroger Precision Marketing) pioneered the model. By 2026 it has extended to mid-market grocery, pharmacy, and DIY chains.
Relevance for Smaller Retailers
Independent retailers and smaller chains can participate in retail media at a more modest scale by connecting their in-store digital signage to a programmatic DOOH network. This allows brands to buy inventory across many smaller stores simultaneously, which the individual retailer couldn't sell alone.
Alternatively, a retailer can run its own simple retail media operation by selling fixed sponsorship slots on its screens directly to a handful of supplier brands — no programmatic platform required.
Measurement
Retail media networks measure performance through:
- Impressions — estimated number of people who saw an ad
- Dwell time — how long people stopped near the screen
- Sales lift — whether the advertised product saw increased purchases during the campaign (requires POS data integration)
